WAKES 2006
All the fun of the fair.....
The annual Castle Donington Wakes have been hailed as another success by the organisers.
Plenty of people turned out on the Thursday evening for the official opening which was conducted by Parish Council Chairman Colin Burton and May Queen Kate Forey. They got the proceedings underway and then set about handing out free tickets to youngsters.
The annual fair is 728 years old and the right to hold the Wakes was granted by King Edward 1 to Henry de Lacy in 1278. The modern Wakes has some traditional fairground attractions mixed in with modern funfair rides.
Before the event got underway each day a briefing meeting was held to make sure all the stringent regulations regarding the event were adhered to and that all contingency plans were in place.
Council members also acted as marshals and were there to back up the Wakes Marshals and Police. The only complaints received this year's Wakes were in connection with litter and the Chairman Colin Burton told Nunews that he accepted it had been a problem, but that it will be dealt with so that next year it will not be an issue.
He said:"We did receive a few complaints about the amount of litter that was left on the site, although to be fair it had been very windy".
"Apologies to those affected and thanks to those others who helped with the clear up"
"On the Saturday evening showmen and councillors had done quite a bit of litter picking, but it is accepted that there was still some left which was exacerbated by the windy conditions."
"However, there was no trouble to speak of, and the police did an excellent job, particularly on the Friday night when a number of out-of-village youths descended on the Wakes with the intent of causing trouble - but to no avail!"
PC Gordon Doudie the beat officer of Castle Donington added: "We did have prior information that a fight might be planned but it never materialised".
"There were no disorder offences, in fact nothing major happened at all and any small incidents were dealt with at the scene".
Parish Plan update
In July 2005 the Parish Council resolved to support the production of a Parish Plan. The project will take approximately 18 months and is supported and partly funded by the Rural Communities Council.
The Parish Plan is currently at the stage of collating information being gleaned from the reponses of all the questionnaires completed by the residents of Castle Donington.
A report document will be produced for circulation to all the relevent service providers.
If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to complete one - this is your chance to have a say about the future of Castle Donington - please contact the Parish Council officer on 01332-810432 or Eric Forshaw on 01332-858267
