Leicestershire Food Fortnight.

If you have a food or drink business in Leicestershire, don't miss the opportunity of getting involved in this year's Leicester and Leicestershire Food Fortnight.

Over 55 individual businesses took part in last year's initiative to raise the profile of food and drink in the county – and there were a staggering 75 individual food-based events for people to visit. Businesses reported increased footfall and sales and more importantly their visibility in the community was raised with a national and local PR campaign, online listings on the dedicated website and entry into the Leicester Mercury Events Guide – which is all free to the businesses and community groups taking part. More »

Work on this year's Food Fortnight has already started and Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council are calling for all food and drink businesses or community groups in Leicester and Leicestershire to get in touch. Could you hold a special event? Could you offer customers tastings of local produce or hold demonstrations? Could you offer a special offer or promotion during the Fortnight? What could you do to raise the profile of your business by being involved in this year's Food Fortnight? Could you organise an event for your local community – perhaps celebrating its local or heritage foods? We are open to ideas and would love to hear from you.
Comments from some of last year's businesses:

Pete Gardner, Chocolate Alchemy, Loughborough
"Every chocolate tasting session I did was fully booked and I promoted it with a poster in my shop window for a couple of days on top of the promotion in the Leicester Mercury and online. I would definitely do it again next year as it is a very good way for me to promote my business in the run up to Christmas."

Ted Tann-Watson, Organiser of Donisthorpe Apple Day
"We had a turnout of over 300 people to our event – the best ever. We were delighted with the coverage both in the Leicester Mercury events guide and on promotional posters and fliers, which really helped encourage visitors to our event, from all over the County. I would definitely take part in the Food Fortnight again in the future.

Jessica Edmonds, Born and Bread – Bread-making Demonstrations, Hinckley
"My event was booked up immediately the Events Guide came out. I would definitely take part in Food Fortnight again as it really helped to raise my profile."

£12,500 For Your Community!
£12,500 For Your Community!

Leicestershire County Council has made available £320,000 per year for local communities to invest in local improvement of their choice. The funding is available through the 25 Community Forums.
This Community Forum Budget is not a regular grant fund, because local residents are involved in all aspects of the process and they will be making the decision which projects should receive a share of the funds.

Community groups can put forward project ideas for which they are seeking funding. All those project proposals are then made available on the forum's website so residents can view and comment on them. The community groups and other local residents then come together for a Decision Night to discuss the projects and vote for their favourites. More »

All proposals will benefit from advice by a panel of experts, including advice on further sources of funding.
Don't miss out! Dates for your diaries:

Submit a Project Proposal: 7th May
View and Comment: 8th May - 4th June
Register your interest to attend: 8th May - 28th May
Decision Night: 4th June

Information about how to apply, view and comment on projects and register your interest to attend your local Decision night is available on your forum homepage. You can also call 0116 305 7034 for more information. » Less

We are seeking your views on the draft strategy for health and wellbeing in Leicestershire.

This strategy is our overarching plan to improve the health and wellbeing of children and adults in the county and to reduce health inequalities.
The strategy is driven by our joint strategic needs assessment, the overarching assessment of the health and wellbeing needs of our population across the wider health and social care economy.

Over the next three years Leicestershire's Health and Wellbeing Board, in partnership with local stakeholders, aims to "add quality and years to life" by improving health throughout people's lives, reducing health inequalities and focusing on the needs of the local population. More »

Please follow the link to the County Council website to Have your say on the draft strategy by reading the document and completing the form. » Less

SHIRE Community Climate Change Grants are available for projects in Leicestershire (not Leicester City or Rutland) to improve energy efficiency and reduce the potential impacts of climate change for community buildings.

Grants put local people at the heart of the community with the choice, decision making and leadership for community improvements, placed firmly within communities themselves.

See attached poster for more details.

How often do you use your local pub, village shop, post office, library?

How important are they to you and your community?

Due to changes in our lifestyle habits, the increase in out of town superstores and reductions in public sector funding - how confident can we be that these services will survive? Is it important? And do we need to take action to ensure that they are still here in 5 or 10 years time?

Join the Leicestershire Rural Partnership to explore these dilemmas and consider what communities and partners can do to reverse the downward trend of village services. Speakers include the Plunkett Foundation, Pub is the Hub and Leicestershire County Council library service. More »

It's a tough time to be a rural retailer in the UK. Aggressive tactics from large supermarkets, changes in the way people shop, compounded by a perceived drop in disposable income from UK consumers.

Leicestershire Rural Partnership have recognised this and will be providing independent and specialist retail consultancy to help protect, support and grow this vital sector of our community.

For more information on the support available, from online support,1-2-1 Email and Telephone Support, Grant support and face to face support visit the Village Shop Support Website.
